Antioxidants are the good chemicals that help slow down the process of aging by nourishing the skin and giving back its natural glow. These chemicals do not overturn the aging process rather it make the changes less visible and abrupt. If there are good chemicals then there are also the bad ones-the free radicals. Individuals should be wary of these chemicals since this damage the body. Once free radicals invade the body it will wreak havoc on the system. The early signs of free radical invasion are on the outer part of the body, the skin. To arm oneself with enough protection, antioxidants should figure in the daily diet. These good chemicals are present in fruits and vegetables so these foods should always be a part of the everyday diet.

It is very easy to get confused especially when dealing with terms that are very strange to us such as antioxidants and free radicals. To be able to stay healthy and keep that wonderful skin, one needs to completely understand the mechanism behind these chemicals' actions. Stocking up knowledge on what one takes in the body is a good start towards one's goal.

Free radicals will definitely be in the way towards achieving a healthy skin. This is due to the fact that free radicals' main effect is to act up once the body uses oxygen. A chain reaction then ensues with the cells of the body becoming affected.

These free radicals target the skin cells thereby damaging the skin structure. When the skin cells are damaged, visible changes occur. These changes range from the simple wrinkle formation to those skin diseases and/or cancers, which are very difficult to treat. To prevent this from happening or worsening for those people who already have skin problems, loading up on antioxidants will definitely help in repairing the damaged cells.

If the free radicals are the antagonists the antioxidants are the protagonists. They come in the picture to help save the cells from further destruction by free radicals. Unfortunately the body does not produce these antioxidants so outside help is needed to come up with them. Vegetables and fruits are rich in antioxidants. There are also food supplements rich in antioxidants. This will not stop the aging process but it will definitely slow down the onset of harmful effects.

A study by the American Institute for Cancer Research found out that people taking their antioxidants from fruits and vegetables manifest with less oxidation in the body than those taking food supplements, which contain antioxidants.

So if you want more protection, go for the all-natural antioxidants. Consuming fruits and vegetables is a very simple and nutritious way to keep that skin from being penetrated by harmful free radicals.
