There are a number of causes of acne like hormonal imbalance, genetic disorder, menstrual cycle disturbances, stress etc. that are scientifically proven. People from different regions and societies have different myths and misunderstandings about acne but with the research and advancements in science, all these myths have been proven wrong. Here are some of the internationally known myths about acne.

Chocolate

It is one of the most widespread myths about acne that eating more chocolate can cause acne or make it worse. There have been a lot of research about this and now it can be said without any hesitation that chocolate and acne do not have anything in common. Acne is caused by excess sebum on skin and chocolate neither produces sebum nor stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum. In one of the research in America, a lot of people were convinced to take part in the research. They had to eat some extra chocolate than an average person. Although a lot of people did got ill due to eating too much chocolate but their acne did not became severe.

Masturbation

It is one of the oldest myths about acne. People in the past used to believe that masturbation causes pimples and zits on face. Researchers have concluded that masturbation does not cause acne. So it is another myth and misconception about acne.

Lifestyle

Some people in the west believe that the lifestyle of some of the people is responsible for acne scars on their face. They believe that working in places that lack fresh air, irregular pattern of sleep, and use of too much of carbonated drinks than water can also cause acne. The main cause of this belief is that this type of lifestyle is mostly common in teenagers and acne is also seen mostly in teenagers. But it is also not more than a myth about acne and the main cause of acne in teenagers is hormonal changes in their body not their style of life.
